DREAM JOB TUTORIAL

Introduction
Over the last few years, numerous people have approached Susan to ask how she achieved a particular shot. She now offers consulting, image critiques and seminars to help the beginning photographer. Below we have outlined tips on how to successfully capture the lights reflected on the water at night, as well as showcase the light and intensity of autumn leaves.

"Susan is a wealth of information about how to market photographs.  She suggested some great tools to use, so I could start contacting potential buyers and get my images seen right away. She also answered some Photoshop questions I that helped improve my photos.  My session with her was well worth the time and money spent and it was fun!" - Barbara S., Portland, Oregon

Night Photography Tips

Taking night shots requires a quality film or digital camera that can accommodate a variety of lens. It also requires a tripod, preferably a Bogen with a moveable ball head. And, a cable release to attach to your camera to aid in counting the seconds that you hold the shutter open.

The night that we selected for instruction was a clear night with a full moon. Our first task was to get some great shots of the Harvest Moon. We tried a number of vantage points and finally settled on the West bank of the Willamette River near the Hawthorne Bridge.

Here is what Susan used to achieve the “Harvest Moon” shot:

Camera: Canon 20D
Lens: Canon 75-300

Tripod: Bogen with Manfrotto ball head.

Settings: f20, bulb setting, held for 1 second, 100 ISO

Autumn Leaves
Autumn LeavesWith fall foliage in full swing, this is an excellent time to take shots of the intense colors that we only see once a year. Here’s what I did to achieve the backlit image of the autumn leaves. It was a bright, sunny day but I wanted to capture the sunlight as highlights on the leaves and keep the background dark. The only way to achieve this was to take my f-stop down to 22. This narrowed my depth of field and kept the background dark and the leaves in sharp focus.
